Butlers Wharf - Fine Art Prints
by Chris Page
Buters Wharf - The Thames Collection.
In the heart of Victorian London, nestled along the Thames, Butlers Wharf as part of Shad Thames rose as the city’s mighty pantry, home to the largest warehouse complex of its time. Completed in 1873, this bustling district stored vast troves of tea, coffee, spices, and exotic goods, all arriving by riverboat to feed the appetites of a growing metropolis. So vital was this stretch to the city’s sustenance that it earned the evocative nickname, The Larder of London.
An 1878 description paints a vivid picture: from Morgan’s Lane to St. Saviour’s Dock, the riverside thrummed with life and labor. Along streets once known as Pickle Herring Street and Shad Thames, an unbroken chain of wharves, granaries, mills, and factories crowded both sides of the narrow roadway, industry pulsing through every brick and cobblestone.
Yet, time and technology changed the rhythm. As the 20th century unfolded, the rise of container shipping and port congestion pushed trade further east. By 1972, the warehouses fell silent. But decay brought opportunity. In the 1970s, the abandoned spaces offered refuge to artists seeking inspiration and cheap rent—among them, reportedly, David Hockney and Derek Jarman.
Then came rebirth. During the 1980s and ’90s, developers and dreamers transformed the once-forgotten warehouses into stylish flats. Today, Butlers Wharf balances its industrial past with modern sophistication, its cobbled lanes now echoing not with the clatter of commerce but with the clink of wine glasses in riverside restaurants and the hum of conversation in boutique shops.
