Cloud Hedge
by Chris Page
Walmer Castel and it Yew "Cloud" Hedge that dates back to 1866 when the Broadwalk Garden was created. It is said that the hedge was neglected during the Second World War, and that a heavy weight of snow during the hard winter of 1947 made it even more misshapen, a form in which it has been kept since.
The Castle was once a Tudor artillery fortress that became a stately-home for the Lords Warden of the Cinque Ports, including the Iron Duke of Wellington. Walmer Castle was orginally built during the reign of Henry VIII as a response to the perceived threat of invasion from Europe. While no such invasion ever came, the castle did later see action when it was besieged by Parliamentarian forces during the English Civil Wars.
