Five miles out from Whitstable Harbour stands the "Red Sands Forts" at the head of the Thames Estuary. Now abandoned these metal giants were constructed in the second world war to protect London and other Thames settlements from the aerial and naval attack. Photograph from the sailing barge "Greta".
