The Prospect of Whitby - Fine Art Prints
by Chris Page
The Prospect of Whitby - The Thames Collection.
Wander along the north bank of the Thames at Wapping and you’ll stumble upon a scattering of old stairways, some half-hidden between buildings, others bold against the weathered embankment. At low tide, these steps descend all the way to the river’s exposed foreshore, once vital arteries feeding the lifeblood of London’s maritime trade. In those days, the Thames bustled with small cargo boats jostling for space, and the air rang with the sounds of loading, shouting, and industry. Where there was hard graft, of course, there was a pub, and never too far to walk for it.
Among the drinking dens of historic note, few rival The Prospect of Whitby. Believed to be London’s oldest riverside inn, it’s been quenching thirsts since 1520, making it a seasoned old timer even when Shakespeare first wandered into town. Over the centuries, its weathered timbers have hosted a roll call of famous patrons, from the brush-wielding Turner to the diary-scribbling Pepys, and naturally, the ever-curious Dickens. If walls could talk, this place would never shut up.
