Voortrekker Koppie
by Mike Rossi
As I stood 2-metres up on the Land Rover game-viewer, I wonder what Gerhard Moerdijk, the architect who designed the Voortrekker Monument thought, when he first saw this Koppie that became to be know as the Voortrekker Koppie?
They say this monolith granite edifice was his stimulation. Having lived in the Waterburg region, he often visited this vast expanse of the LImpopo for tranquility and inspiration. Did he stand at this spot when that moment of inspiration came sometime in early 1937? Or was it one of the several points-of-view I had visited to study this majestic piece of granite in the last ten days?
I had waited five days for Nimbus clouds to arrive. Late afternoon as dusk started to arrive on the sixth day she appeared. Crossing from northeast to northwest and over where the Shashe and the Limpopo rivers meet that unite Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa in the distance. Like the devil’s shroud she revolved in the sky, growling, occasionally, barking her thunderbolts across the skyline.
